Rose eyes the plate he offers, then him for a moment longer. Reluctance there but perhaps not for the reasons he might expect. Crossbow or no, she wasn't worried about whether she could take him or not. Rose was deadly, with or without her knife but what he offered (without knowing it), was the simplicity of conversation and while most people would be open to it, for Rose that was a far more complicated issue. Every time she got close to somebody in Atia, they were taken away and now here in Pathema? Did she really want to start all that again?
Still, she hadn't eaten and unlike Daryl? Rose had never had to fend for herself. She'd lived on take-out for four years straight. She wasn't going to last very long unless she picked up a skill or three.
Rose's gaze swept the tent once more, reassuring herself that nothing had changed from the last check before moving closer to Daryl, positioning herself so that she still had a good view of her surroundings before taking a strawberry off his plate.
"There was another island like this one. Atia." It was only once she bit into the fruit that she realized just how hungry she was, her tongue snaking out to capture the juices that still clung to her lips before continuing.
"Collars, sex or die, the whole nine yards. It was run by this would be God, also named Atia." Rose all but rolling her eyes at that bit of vanity. "Until one day, she throws a hissy fit and announces we're all going home." She reaches for another piece of fruit, looking at it long and hard, Rose clearly not as trusting of the food as she'd suggested Daryl could be. "So after four years there I think I'm finally going to go back to my life only, I wake up naked on the floor with nothing but this thing to keep me covered."

It's obvious what that means to him if she's been here before she knew more about it all than anyone else did. He could see she was feeling a lot more than she was letting him see, and that was the only thing keeping him cordial right now. That, and the warmth in his belly. When she starts slowing down with the fruit the plate finds a vacant spot of floor where it won't be crushed underfoot.
"So far no one else has the same amount of know-how." Or at least is as accepting of where they are. Looking around, all he's seeing is people trying to get more lost than they already were. "Any proof these so-called gods are actually what they say?"
He found out the hard way that the neck gear wouldn't come off. He tried several times in several different ways but all it got him was a tighter fashion statement and a shorter fuse.

A bitter bark of laughter escaped, Rose's tongue rolling out to grab the last traces of juice from her lips. "Not sure know-how is really going to be much help." She knew the rules, she supposed. She didn't have to go through the agony that she had when she first got to Atia, the whole coming to terms with their definition of 'worship'.
"You mean other than what they can do?" She lifted her shoulder in a shrug, leaning back as she almost appeared to relax; about as much as Rose ever did anyway.
"You'll see once the head games start." And they would start, she was sure of that. "One day it's business as usual and the next? A rain storm will come and you're jumping the first person you see or... you wake up in bed with somebody you're sure is you're husband or wife only, you've probably barely said two words to them before."

Instead of asking any more questions Daryl stifles a laugh. Whatever force brought him here, out of mountains of bodies, and cold hard steel- struggling every fucking minute of every fucking day still underestimated his ability to produce results.
"So head games and head games." If some omnipotent force was treating people like cattle and running them through drills the very least they could do was give them more to go off of. Hell, he's met sociopaths with better bedside manner. "What are you gonna do?"
Now he's leveling with her. She's been somewhere like this before, knows all the history, and had her share of losses. She might cover it up fine enough but that doesn't mean she's not weighing her options and he'd much rather be on the side of things with experience.

"That's one way of putting it alright." She found you got a sense of how somebody would do, whether they were likely to adapt or crack and she'd been talking with him for all of five minutes, and already she knew which one he was. If you didn't learn how to laugh around here, you'd spend the whole time shaking and crying.
"What am I going to do..." She repeated, a sigh passing her lips. Rose knew the answer to that one already but she hated the idea of saying it out loud. She remembered all too well what it was like to come here and want nothing more than to fight, kick, scream and bite your way off the island. It takes a while for reality to set in.
"Watch. Wait. It's all you really can do. I'm not saying I won't take my chances in trying to get out of here but you fight back, they kill you. You die you lose your memories and I don't know about you? But I don't want to lose so much of myself that I forget why I want out of here." It felt as shitty to say it as it no doubt sounded but it was their reality now.

"You got any idea how the selection process works? Or do these dicks have their fingers in way too many pies?" So far, after surveying the crowd, he hasn't seen a lot of the same. Too many differences between folks for him to think there were patterns and nobody he recognized yet, Daryl didn't know if that was comforting or not. The whole idea of this place was a bad joke, and he knew people like Michonne- Like Rick, hell, even Carol would enjoy the sick sense of humor. It beats walking corpses any day.

She knows what she's saying isn't exactly light and easy but Rose figured it was better to know the reality of living here than be fed some line. She knew some people grew to like Atia - as much as anyone could - and she herself had to acknowledge that despite her wishes, she really shouldn't be in a hurry to get back but if you're going to sign up to stick around? You need to know the truth, not the hearts and flowers explanation.
"No clue. But it's pretty common that they bring people you know... at least for most people." Not her, not much. There'd been a few faces over the years but then they were gone, too. "People I know back home... they're better off where they are." Safe. Protected. Rose would have lost her mind if Liss' ever showed up.

"Catch-22, right? Nobody wants to be alone but people sure as shit don't wanna sentence their friends to this." More bad humor, because he can tell just by looking at her that alone was like a shield for her, the same way it was for him.
